This glorious loom-woven Madagascar silk shawl is elegant and soft. Its name, "Mena," means "red" in Malagasy, the natural color derived from bark of the native 'Nato' tree. Each shawl is crafted from drop-spun wild Borocera silk. Accent lines in the pattern are created from drop-spun mulberry silk.
This shawl is completely handmade using a traditional Betsileo method passed down from mother to daughter. Hand-spun silk yarn is woven on a floor loom. The women of the weaving association craft each piece in their small village in the central highlands of Madagascar.
This shawl is a cultural treasure that can last a lifetime.
- Each large shawl measures 19.5” x 70”
- Made from Borocera wild silk that is only found in Madagascar and mulberry silk
- Completely hand-crafted
- Naturally dyed with 'Nato' bark
- Verified Fair Trade
Your purchase directly helps a weaver in our partner association support her family. It also preserves the cultural tradition of silk weaving in Madagascar. Every shawl comes with a hangtag that tells the story of the silk.
Washing instructions: Dry cleaning is recommended. Or simply steam iron on a low-ish setting to refresh the shawl from time to time without washing. This gives it a lovely sheen.
