Fabric by the Yard
Are you a textile artist, designer, or architect looking for one-of-a-kind sustainable materials? Cocoon Silk by the Yard is available!
Tanana artisans create natural, sustainably produced cocoon silk made from wild silk species native to Madagascar, as well as cultivated mulberry silk material. Our silk farmers use a unique sustainable harvesting technique. In fact, every purchase promotes conservation efforts for endemic species in Madagascar.
All of our cocoon silk material is Fair Trade and Wildlife Friendly verified.
What is wild silk?
Wild silk species must live in the forest and cannot be cultivated like traditional silk. The cocoons are harvested using a gentle method that keeps the silkworm intact and allows them to mature into a moth. The empty cocoons are steamed flat and sewn together to create a uniquely textured, lustrous textile.
