This glorious loom-woven Madagascar silk shawl is elegant and soft. Its name, "rahona," means "cloud" in Malagasy, a symbol of change and renewal. Each shawl is made from drop-spun silk. The accent lines in the pattern are dyed with Madagascar black soil, a juxtaposition of earth and sky.
Every shawl is completely handmade using a traditional Betsileo weaving method passed down from mother to daughter. Hand-spun silk yarn is woven on a floor loom. The women of the weaving association carefully craft each piece in their small village in the central highlands of Madagascar. Every shawl is a cultural treasure that can last a lifetime.
- Large shawl measures 19.5” x 70”
- Made from mulberry silk and Borocera wild silk that is only found in Madagascar
- Completely hand-crafted
- Naturally dyed accents
- Verified Fair Trade
Your purchase directly helps a weaver in our partner association support her family. It also preserves the cultural tradition of silk weaving in Madagascar.
Every shawl comes with a hangtag that tells the story of the silk.
Washing instructions: Dry cleaning is recommended. Or simply steam iron on a low-ish setting to refresh the shawl from time to time without washing. This gives it a lovely sheen.
